• The annual meeting of the Lewiston Loan & Building Association will be held at the rooms of the Lewiston Trust & Safe Deposit Company, Lisbon Street, Lewiston, Wednesday evening, May 27, at 7:30 o’clock, for the election of officers and the transaction of such other business as may legally come before the meeting.

• It is understood that the property on Middle Street formally occupied by the Builders’ Supply Co. has been purchased by Harry J. Parker of Lowell, Mass., who is to start a bobbin shop there. This will mean employment to about 300 people. The property was purchased through Webber & Webber of Auburn and the final papers passed the last of the week. The location is a fine one for manufacturing purposes being close to the Maine Central Railroad and near the business section of the city. The plant has been for sale for some time.

50 years ago, 1958

• Members of the F.W. Woolworth Co. Bowling League ended the season with a dinner Saturday evening at Vallee’s Steak House, Scarborough. Trophies were presented as follows: High average, Gordon Carr and Ada LePage; high three strings, Harold Mayberry and Lucille Mayberry; high singles, George Bellas and Judith Dee; high team, Gordon Carr, Roland Jean, Patricia Carr and Janice Clark; low average, Doris Filteau.

25 years ago, 1983

• The House Intelligence Committee, attacked by President Reagan for trying to cut off covert U.S. aid to Nicaraguan rebels, declared Tuesday that the CIA’s operation has done more to harm the image of the United States than it has to block leftist gun-running in Latin America.

• UMO’s Bill Swift threw a one-hitter Tuesday as the Black Bears defeated the University of Connecticut in the must-win second game of a double-header to give Maine the ECAC baseball title. Maine advances to the NCAA Northeast Regionals, which get underway Memorial Day weekend in Orono.
