WALES – It was a long weekend to dwell on a difficult loss.

The Erskine Academy softball team lost a heartbreaker to Belfast by one run in extra innings on Friday. It was a game within their reach, and the loss lingered.

Erskine turned that disappointment into joy Monday. The Eagles bounced back and handed Oak Hill its second loss of the season with a 5-2 win.

“After Friday, this is huge,” said Erskine’s sophomore pitcher Sam Morse. “We came back strong and didn’t let that loss bother us.”

Morse no-hit the Raiders (7-2) through the first five innings, before finishing with a two-hitter. She struck out six and walked just one.

“We let a lot of nice pitches go by,” said Oak Hill coach Julie Boucher. “We watched a lot of nice ones. We’ve been hitting the ball really well lately. So I thought the offense would not be an issue. We were kind of just looking at the pitches go by.”

Morse was aided by some strong defense. Ashley Peaslee had a pair of nice catches in center, including a backhander that robbed Deidra Dubuc of hit.

Becca Roberts broke up the no-hitter in the sixth with a double. Becca Belaire added a single in the seventh. Morse and Courtney Burns each had a pair of hits for the Eagles (7-3).

Both teams were shaky early, but the Eagles escaped the first tied 1-1 with a stellar defensive play at the plate. Erskine took the lead in the top of the inning when Peaslee had a bunt hit and scored on a pair of errors. Two Erskine errors helped the Raiders tie the game. Sarah Albert scored on fly by Stacy Light that was dropped in the outfield. The Raiders had a chance for more, but Erskine ended the inning with a double play. After Lauren Hall’s grounder was played to first for the second, Ashley Richardson relayed the ball home, and Rachael Siegriedt made the tag on a sliding Natalie Caron to end the inning.

“We had an error in the field, but we came right back and took care of it,” said Morse.

The Eagles opened the lead in the fourth. Morse led off with a double. After Richardson walked, Courtney Burns singled in Morse and Richardson scored when the ball was misplayed. Danielle Burns added an RBI single for a 4-1 lead.

“They had some nice hits and had some aggressive baserunning and took advantage of some defensive things,” said Boucher.

The Raiders got one back in the sixth. Albert was hit by a pitch for the second time and scored on Roberts’ double.

Erskine’s Courtney Burns singled in another run in the seventh. A single and an error put Belaire at third in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Morse got a ground ball to end the game.

“Against a good team, you can’t wait too long, and you can’t let them get ahead too much, because it’s even more difficult to try to chip away,” said Boucher.
