FAYETTE – A Livermore Falls woman ended up with minor injuries but charged with several crimes after taking a friend’s car and crashing it, police said. The driver was pulled unconscious from the burning vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames, Lt. Thomas Gould said.
Bridgett Ames, 19, was charged by police with unauthorized use of a vehicle, operating under the influence, driving without a license and driving to endanger, Gould said.
A Strong woman staying with Ames at a house on Route 17 returned home in her vehicle and Ames, who was at the house and reportedly highly intoxicated, got into the car and drove off after a struggle for the keys, Gould said.
The owner of the car got into another car with another person and went looking for Ames, he said.
The owner reported the car stolen at 8 p.m. Wednesday and initially thought Ames had gone up Souther Road. Police were in that area and had no contact with her, Gould said.
The owner and the other person went up Route 17 to Fayette Ridge where they caught up with Ames, who had gone off the road, struck an embankment, rolled over and landed in the bushes, he said.
The man in the car with the owner was able to pull the unconscious Ames out of the vehicle, which had caught on fire, Gould said.
Police officer John Furr located Ames and placed her under arrest.
She was brought to the police station and posted $1,000 unsecured bail, Gould said.
Maine State Police also were involved in the investigation, he said.
