AUBURN – Donald W. Linscott, quartermaster, Capt. Frank W. Hulett Post 1603, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., reported at a recent meeting, that although the Memorial Day weekend will be busy, volunteers have come forward to make it another tribute to fallen heroes, those who haev served and those still serving.

The annual Poppy Days will be conducted at Wal-Mart from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, May 23 to 25. Proceeds will be used for veterans’ relief.

Sunday, May 25, will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the flagging of the 13 graveyards assigned to the Auburn VFW. Many of the older graves contain veterans of the Revolution.

The post will also make notations of those who do not have a grave marker, so they can work with the city to obtain one. A report was also made of the recent inventory of veterans’ graves in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Monday, Memorial Day, will begin with the raising of the colors at the veterans’ plot in Mt. Auburn, and the post will be involved with the ceremonies at the Gracelawn Memorial Park at 12:30 p.m.

Other reports concerned the suspension of the bi-weekly morning breakfasts and the Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments until September.

The charter was draped in memory of the recent passing of life member Gard Enman.

Past state and District 9 commanders, along with present department officers, attending the meeting were recognized.

New member was Lt. Col. Retired Robert E. Burbank and Joseph Paradis was reinstated.

Arthur Roy reported on the recent blood drive held at the mall and thanked all that helped. Installed for the coming year by PSC Arthur J. Roy were Quartermaster Don Linscott, Safety Officer and Trustee Norman Cloutier, Service Officer John Lander and OOD Charles Burns.

Donations were approved: $200 for homeless veterans; $100, VFW National Home for Children; $50, Auburn Fire Department children’s fund; $253, Fairlawn Men’s Association; and $20, charter for the newly formed VFW Sea Scout Ship.

Linscott reported that the plans have been finalized for VFW 88th state convention to be held under the auspices of the local VFW on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 13, 14 and 15, at the Ramada Inn.

Roy reported on the Flag Day ceremony that will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Clover Manor Nursing Home. The next meeting will be held June 11 at the post home, 588 Minot Ave.
