PORTLAND (AP) – The staff of the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission says changes are needed in Plum Creek Timber Co.’s plan to rezone some 20,000 acres in the Moosehead Lake region for 975 house lots and two resorts.

While taking no stance on whether the project should ultimately be approved, the staff recommended that development areas be scaled back and restrictions on conservation land be tightened.

The recommendations, spelled out in a 127-page document released Tuesday evening, will be considered by the commission when it meets next Tuesday and Wednesday in Augusta.

Conservation groups have been battling the Plum Creek project, which is the largest subdivision ever proposed in Maine’s North Woods. LURC has been gathering information and testimony on the plan for the past three years.
