Student dance benefits Africans

NEW SHARON – The Cape Cod Hill School fifth grade class of Lynn Wells and Helen Buzzell were challenged to think beyond their circle of life and look to the world recently.

In doing so, they realized people in Africa are in need. After much discussion on how to help, they voted to contribute treated mosquito nets to the Veto the ‘Squito program (www.vetothesquito.org).

The program provides mosquito nets to families in Africa to prevent the spread of malaria and elephantiasis. Each net costs $10.

The class discussed ways to earn the money and decided to put on a dance. Students worked together to organize all aspects of the dance. They discussed possible problems and solutions and enlisted help from the Student Council. The class earned $260 to buy 26 nets. One student said, “It felt great working hard for the nets and we all got to have fun.”
