AUGUSTA (AP) – Gov. John Baldacci says Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those who’ve died in service to the country – and those who are still serving as well.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, Baldacci said Maine Army and Air National Guard members are deployed in Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout the Middle East and Europe. Also, Bravo Company of the 172nd Infantry, based in Brewer, is to be called up for deployment in 2010.

Baldacci said he prays there will be peace before they go off to war. He says he’s “talked to too many families who have lost a son, brother, father or friend in Iraq or Afghanistan.”

In the Republican response, state Sen. Richard Rosen of Bucksport said the weekend’s news will feature the usual Memorial Day stories about black fly season, weekend barbecues and speculation about the summer tourist season.

But Rosen said Mainers should keep in mind the men and women who have served and sacrificed for freedom.
