BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (AP) – Suffolk County police say they have rescued two people asleep on a drifting boat near Fire Island.

Police say officers from the department’s marine unit were on patrol about 1:30 a.m. Monday when they noticed a boat adrift in the East Channel. Police say the boat’s navigational lights were off.

The officers boarded the boat and were about to tow it when two people awoke and emerged from the cabin.

The boat’s 38-year-old owner told police his boat was anchored near shore when he and the other occupant fell asleep. Officers towed the boat to the mainland.
