AUBURN – Cecil H. “Mac” Mahoney Jr., 84, of Penobscot Street, Rumford, died Monday, May 26, Memorial Day at the Hospice House.
He was born in Rumford, Dec. 6, 1923, a son of the late Cecil and Christie (Stevens) Mahoney Sr. He was a graduate of Stephens High School, Class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1945, including two years in the South West Pacific as a heavy gunner and was stationed in Samoa. He was a store manager for A&P Store, Sampsons and Hannaford.
He was a communicant of St. Athanasius-St. John Church, a lifetime member of Rumford Maine Lodge 862 BPOE, where he served as a trustee and on the house committee, member of Napoleon Ouellette Post 24 American Legion, Robert Shand Post 1641, VFW, LeParesseux, Snowshoe Club, Rumford Falls Aerie 1248 FOE, Canton Lake Owners Association. He served on the board of directors for the Demeritt Cemetery in Peru.
He was a 30-year member of the Horseshoe Club and the Oxford Men’s Bowling League.
He was a faithful fan of Mountain Valley High School for 60 years and attended all of their home games. He was an avid sportsman, watching all sports especially ice hockey, football and the Red Sox. He enjoyed his camp at Canton Lake and being with his friends there.
He was married in Rumford on Nov. 8, 1947, to the late Adele Jurgilas, who died in Rumford on Feb. 11, 1999.
Survivors include a brother, Thomas Mahoney of Lewiston; three sisters, Beverly Jasud and her husband, Donald, of Mexico, Ruth Karpen of Rumford and Evelyn Gaul of Rumford; many nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Francis Jurgilas and his wife, Doris, of Florida; and his special friend, Dorothy Cushman of Bryant Pond.
He was predeceased by his wife; and a sister, Dorothy Dorr.
