FARMINGTON – A brief ceremony was held Friday morning in front of Jamie’s Tree at Mt. Blue High School to honor this year’s recipients of the Jamie Beth Shible Memorial Scholarship Award.

Stephen and Julie Shible honored seniors Rebecca Walmer and Brooke Taylor, who will each receive $500 scholarships after completing their first college semester.

Walmer will attend Simmons College in Boston next year majoring in sociology. Taylor will attend St. Joseph’s in Standish majoring in nursing.

“We have awarded 21 scholarships over the last 10 years,” said Stephen Shible. He said he and his wife received applications from five candidates this year, and it was also the first year that they had a male applicant.

Their daughter, Jamie Shible, who attended Mt. Blue High School and participated in cheerleading, died in May 1997 from bacterial meningitis. The scholarships are awarded to students involved in cheerleading. They are asked to complete an application and an essay to be considered for the scholarship.
