BETHEL – The Hip Hop Handbook, a performance group dedicated to the promotion of literacy and creative expression through the Hip Hop Arts, will be teaching and performing at Telstar Middle/High School Friday, May 30.

During the school day, this group will be teaching workshops to both middle and high school students, educating them about the history of hip-hop, along with hands-on instruction of emceeing, deejaying, graffiti arts and breakdancing.

In the evening, they will present a showcase of their talents on the Telstar auditorium stage. The showcase will include performances of musical rap, DJ turntables, vocal percussion and breakdancing.

The Hip Hop Handbook was started in 2006 by a hip hop duo known as the Rebelz. They began a mission to teach and entertain by putting together a showcase representing all the elements of Hip Hop that teaches the true history of one of America’s first music cultures. Their goal is to build confidence in youth, promote the positivity of the Hip Hop culture, and instill self-esteem in kids by helping them to express themselves through this art form.

Their workshops and performances provide students of all ages with the opportunity to experience and enjoy various forms of urban music and dance expression in a safe, respectful, and positive format.

Last year alone the Hip Hop Handbook performed in 30 states, clocking over 90,000 miles. They performed for more than 150,000 students from elementary to college levels and expanded Hip Hop culture awareness. They have worked with many incredible artists and dancers including Jive Turkey’s, Rock Steady Crew, Cirus Run Away’s, Sole Position, F Rock, BYC, Footklan, Massive Monkees and many others.

The Hip Hop Handbook performance will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Telstar Complex, 284 Walker’s Mills Road. Admission is $4 and all proceeds will benefit the TMS Visiting Artists Fund, which will help to bring exciting and educational visiting artists and performers to the school next year.
