LYNN, Mass. (AP) – Authorities say a Lynn police officer shot and killed an East Boston man after he refused to drop a knife.

Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office says the officer saw the man, later identified as 34-year-old Michael Addesa, acting suspiciously at a city intersection early Tuesday. Blodgett says the officer ordered Addesa to stop, but he refused.

After a foot chase, Blodgett says the suspect stopped and confronted the officer with a knife. He was ordered to drop the knife, but instead moved toward the officer.

Blodgett says the officer fired once, hitting Addesa in the chest. He was pronounced dead at Salem Hospital.

The Daily Item of Lynn identified the officer as Paul Holey, a 14-year veteran.

A spokesman for the district attorney said Addesa had slit one of his wrists at his girlfriend’s house earlier in the evening.
