JAY – The School Committee will hold an open-style town meeting vote Monday on several articles pertaining to a proposed $10.28 million fiscal 2009 school budget.
It is the first of two votes required for proposed school budgets around the state this year.
The vote will be followed on Tuesday, June 10, by a “yes” or “no” referendum budget validation vote between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. at the Community Center polls. It is listed as Article 44 on the referendum warrant that includes articles for the proposed $6 million municipal budget for fiscal 2009. That budget reflects a $46,606 or about 1 percent increase over the existing budget, once $2.6 million in anticipated revenue is factored in.
The school spending plan is $431,629 more than this year’s $9.85 million budget, but taxpayers will be asked to raise $492,836 less through taxes than they did for this year’s budget.
The amount to be raised is proposed at $7.8 million through taxes to meet the budget compared to $8.3 million for the 2007-08 budget. The rest of the funding will come from the state and other sources.
Monday’s open town meeting style vote on the school budget begins at 7 p.m. at the Jay Middle School cafeteria to consider articles pertaining to education in the amounts of:
• $4.3 million for regular instruction.
• $1.3 million for special education.
• $839,788 for other instruction, which covers support services including nurse, libraries, guidance and social workers.
• $495,748 for student and staff support, which includes school committee and legal expenses.
• $314,681 for system administration.
• $502,596 for school administration.
• $528,245 for transportation and buses.
• $1.29 million for facilities maintenance.
• $628,197 for debt service.
• $51,735 for other expenditures.
• nothing for career and technical education. The state requires this article but money Jay School Department spends for those programs is done through a pre-agreement with Foster Regional Applied Technology Center in Farmington.
