LIVERMORE FALLS – Police are investigating incidents of Molotov cocktails being tossed on property at Murray Hall and Livermore Falls middle and high schools, Lt. Thomas Gould said Wednesday.
Police have a suspect.
“It appears to be random acts and the buildings involved were not targeted for any particular reason,” Gould said
Late Monday, officers Cort Hladik and Eric Bernier responded to a small fire in the parking lot behind Verso Paper’s Murray Hall on Main Street.
“Witnesses reported seeing a vehicle driver toss a glass jar into the lot that started burning,” Gould said. “Upon arrival, the fire was burning out but it appeared to have been some type of gel.”
The officers found the same type of burn pattern at the front entrance to the high and middle schools, Gould said.
“Evidence from the scene indicated that the items were some type of Molotov cocktail that was thrown from a moving vehicle and burst into flames,” he said. “No damage was done to either building as the items struck the concrete and brick portion of the structures.”
Hladik and Steve Gould located more witnesses Tuesday.
A suspect has been interviewed and is assisting police with the investigation, Gould said. Charges will be filed, he added.
The glass jars were filled with chemicals designed to ignite and burn in a concentrated area, Gould said.
“Had they struck a wooden structure, it most certainly would have sustained heavy damage,” Gould said.
