WINTHROP – With the aid of 13 walks and six errors, West Paris handed Winthrop its first loss of the season, 16-1, in the Men’s Senior Baseball League.
Three walks and an error led to four runs in the top of the first for West Paris (1-0). The Westies’ pitchers held the Red Sox offense at bay from there, scattering six hits, striking out seven and allowing one walk. West Paris combined that tidy work with flawless defense.
The Sox scored their lone run in the bottom of the first on back-to-back hits by Bob Cochran and Rich Ozment. West Paris pounded out 15 hits and scored a run in all but two innings. Jarod and Jerry Verrill and Jim Ryerson each cracked three hits apiece. Mark Hreben and Kyle Kennison also were repeat offenders. Ozment and Matt Richardson provided multiple hits for the Sox. Brian Cox won with six innings of work. Brett Witherell absorbed the loss.
