NORWAY – Donald L. Graves, 95, of South Paris, died Wednesday, May 28, at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Sussex, New Brunswick, on July 21, 1912, the son of Robert Graves and Mabel Stone Graves. He attended elementary school and Merrill High School in Smyrna Mills. His family moved to Buckfield in 1929.
He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army, Signal Corp., during World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations from December 1942 to September 1945. On May 30, 1943, he married Ida Barker Turner and they were married 55 years, before her passing on Aug. 26, 1998.
Upon his return from the service, he worked at Wilner Wood Products and Diamond Match. In 1975, he retired from A.C. Lawrence after 30 years. He was an avid reader, he enjoyed day trips and spending time with his family.
He is survived by children, Rita Ross of Paris Hill and Gilbert Turner and his wife, Peggy, of South Paris; a son-in-law, Earl Barker and his wife, Ruth, of Old Town; 11 grandchildren, Stephen Ross and wife, Karen, of South Paris, Vicki Rose and husband, Steve, of Southport, N.C., Brenda Millett and husband, Rusty, of Waterford, Danny Barker of Phoenix, Ariz., Alan Barker of Vinalhaven, Wayne Barker and Tacha Vosburgh of Portland and Phoenix, Ariz., Pam Barker and Ted Newell of Oxford, Marcia Bell and husband, Gerald, of Standish, Donna Stone and husband, Greg, of Portland, Michelle Lowell and husband, Chris, of Waldorf, Md., and Rhonda Barker and John Newnan of Portland; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; sister-in-laws, Mrs. Iva Laird of Lantana, Fla., and Mrs. Ruby Graves of South Paris; several nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Laurice and Bernie Loef of Norway.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Joyce Barker; two sisters, Jessie Haines and Jean Savage; and a brother, Walter Graves.
