FARMINGTON — A man accused of robbing a downtown bank in December was sentenced this week to two years in prison.
Kevin E. Lunn, 38, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of robbery in Franklin County Superior Court Thursday. Justice Michaela Murphy sentenced him to eight years with all but two suspended. The sentence will be followed by three years of probation with the condition that he not return to TD Banknorth in Farmington.
Approximately $4,000 was taken from TD Banknorth on the corner of Main Street and Broadway on Dec. 12 when a man wearing a hooded jacket, black gloves and sunglasses gave a teller a note demanding money, according to court documents. The note said that he had a gun.
The man fled the bank on foot to a van in the municipal parking lot where his girlfriend was waiting.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy David Rackliffe and his dog, Odin, tracked the suspect to the parking lot but lost the scent.
Bank surveillance cameras captured photos of the suspect that led people to call in tips, said Farmington Police Chief Richard Caton III. In the weeks following the bank robbery, Farmington Police investigated leads from several sources and followed up with interviews that provided enough information to prove probable cause and obtain an arrest warrant for Lunn, an unemployed drywaller, on Feb. 29.
Lunn’s address was unknown, but he had last been seen in the Bath/Brunswick area. He turned himself into Sagadahoc County officials March 2 after learning that a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
During an initial court appearance following the arrest, Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson told the court that Lunn had no permanent address but was known to make frequent trips out of state. Evidence suggested that Lunn intended to use the money from the bank robbery to go to Massachusetts to buy drugs, Robinson said.
