Dear Sun Spots: Tommy’s Feral Feline Friends, a strictly nonprofit organization, is hosting its annual yard sale June 13 and 14 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 242 Sawyer Road, Greene, exactly one mile from the railroad tracks. This huge yard sale will have a wide variety of items. The fundraiser is a benefit for the 100 cats that came into our care because of a Monmouth woman who was killed in a car crash. We already take care of 400 feral cats. These cats need medical attention and new homes. Your donation can make all the difference for these precious animals. Please join us in this life saving mission. Your attendance and generous donations help us do what we do best – save lives. For donations please call Norm Blais 207-650-8374 Rain Date: June 20 and 21. – No Name, Lewiston.
Dear Sun Spots: I find your advice in Sun Spots excellent. Now my turn has come to use your expertise. I have three questions. How many inches of snow fell in Lewiston in the year 2007-2008? Many years ago my father had a liqueur called Chartreuse. I’m hoping that someone has the recipe and is willing to share. After the winter we had I found a lot of pine branches that needed to be cut, using my little chain saw. I found that it is now a sticky mess. Would you advise on how to clean it? Thanks for the coming answers. – LYP, Lewiston.
Answer: WGME News 13 Chief Meteorologist Charlie Lopresti notes that there are no “official” snowfall measurements available for Lewiston. A weather watcher for Lewiston reported to Lopresti that a total of 131.80 inches fell. Paul Boudreau, director of Lewiston Public Works Department, also tracks the total snowfall and measured 113 inches. He notes that Lewiston has an average snowfall of 73 inches.
Chartreuse, an ancient green herb liqueur, is still made by Carthusian monks in France from a recipe dating back to 1605. The exact recipes for all forms of Chartreuse remain trade secrets and are known at any given time only to the three monks who prepare the herbal mixture. It is made from a base of grape brandy, flavored with a secret formulation of more than 130 herbs and spices.
Sun Spots was able to find one recipe for Yellow Chartreuse by J.P. Farrell from the book “Making Cordials & Liqueurs at Home,” although it does not contain all of the herbs and spices. Ingredients: 1½ teaspoons chopped Angelica Root, 3 teaspoons lemon balm, 3 teaspoons hyssop, 1 3-inch cinnamon stick, ¼ teaspoon mace, one fifth of vodka, 1 cup sugar syrup, pinch of saffron (optional). Method: Combine all ingredients except the sugar syrup and saffron in a large jar; close tightly and shake well. Let the ingredients steep for one week. Filter through cheesecloth several times. Add the sugar syrup and saffron (if using) and bottle. You may use yellow food coloring; the saffron is just for color.
In reference to your third question, we suggest using a rag with either WD-40 or paint thinner on it to remove sap from your chain saw blade.

Dear Sun Spots: I am looking for somebody to give me free golf lessons. And looking for some PS 1 games, memory card and DVD player to be donated. I would appreciate it. I may be reached at [email protected]. And if anyone knows Joe Bell, I need to get in touch with him. Thank you. – No Name, No Town.
