Sales of Honor Grounds coffee have been going well – so well that many Hannaford stores throughout the state had to restock their aisle displays four days after the coffee’s introduction.

“The cause is a good one and we’re committed to it,” said Michael Norton, spokesman for the supermarket chain.

Portions of the proceeds of the patriotic-branded coffee support the families of Maine National Guard and Reserve soldiers. The coffee got its rollout at stores over the Memorial Day weekend.

John Salterio, one of the founders of the Honor Grounds program, said Hannaford reordered 240 cases of the coffee early Tuesday morning.

“We’ve been very pleased by the response and the support,” he said. “It’s been terrific.”

The campaign has been going so well that its backers expect to present a check to the Maine Guard Family Assistance Foundation in early July.

College-bound

Hanging overhead in the guidance department of Lewiston High School are dozens of homemade college pennants made of construction paper.

Each has the name of a senior and which college he or she plans to attend: Central Maine Community College, the University of Maine, the University of Chicago, Bowdoin, the University of Southern Maine, Ithaca, St. Anselm.

Parents and teachers smile when they walk in and read the names.

“This is the second year we’ve done this,” said guidance counselor Debra Cloutier-Baggs. “It’s neat. It shows where our kids are going.”

As of Wednesday, there were 250 flags hanging, with more going up. About 300 seniors are scheduled to graduate at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on June 6.
