INDUSTRY – Justin F. Scerbo, 53, died May 28, at his home in Industry.
He was born and raised in East Hampton, Long Island, the son of Nicholas Scerbo and Marguerite Regina Colvin Dahl.
He graduated from East Hampton High School and continued his education for life by his everyday desire to learn and do new things. In 1980, he married Leiza Ann Hiltz of Farmington, in East Hampton, L.I., N.Y. In 1981, they relocated to Industry, where he built their home and they became fixtures in the community. The summer they moved to Maine they had a son, Christopher Justin Scerbo. Justin was a man of many interests and hobbies. He was an avid snowmobiler, and past president of the Northern Lites snowmobile club.
He enjoyed drag racing a modified Jeep with his friend Steve, boating at Clearwater Lake and camping. He even went skydiving with his son. He purchased and refurbished a Navy surplus World War II landing craft for cargo purposes and sailed it from Connecticut to the Maine coast. In the community he was a past selectman, co-owned the store at the head of the lake in Industry, and was deeply involved from the beginning in the Town’s annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration. He worked tirelessly at many pursuits, and was successful at everything he pursued. He was an accomplished carpenter, electrician, mechanic, machinist, computer hardware and software specialist, and violin maker.
He worked in Long Island on special effects for Broadway shows and rock concert displays. He worked for Charos Custom Sound installing residential sound systems. Notably he was involved in creating a lightning bolt on stage for Ferran and Associates, where he worked with the lighting and special effects for the bands Foreigner and Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and worked on the special effects for the movies Frankenstein and Altered States. He made his living in Industry as a technician for KIS photo corporation from France and was transferred to New Jersey corporate headquarters to work as their R&D specialist. Later he returned to Industry and started Scerbo Technical and Associates, Inc., which he built into a successful organization that employed a number of people in the community. Along with his wife, Leiza, he turned Clearwater Variety into a respectable establishment dubbed ‘Y-Bob’s Place.’
He provided rental apartments too, and built homes for many members of the community. In his later years he started Scerbo Violins as a business to “relax” into retirement. He was a heavy equipment operator and a skilled carpenter whose work will stand for years to come. Justin cared for his friends and family deeply and was helpful to those in need.
