Maine taxpayers have until the close of business Monday to file for a state rebate for their 2006 property taxes or rent.

The rebates, which can be up to $2,000, are part of the state’s circuit breaker Property Tax and Rent Refund.

Eligible Maine residents can receive a partial refund of property taxes or rent paid during 2006 on their primary residence.

Maine residents who paid more than 4 percent of their 2006 income in property taxes may qualify for a rebate. Renters qualify if they paid more than 20 percent of their income in rent. According to the state’s rules, the rebates do not apply for singles making more than $80,750 or families making more than $105,750 in 2006.

Residents can file an application for a rebate online, at the Maine Department of Revenue’s Web site. That address is www.maine.gov/revenue/taxrelief/tnr.htm.

According to the Maine Revenue Services, the state paid more than $43 million to 92,000 homeowners and renters who participated in the program last year. The average Maine homeowner or renter received $469 toward reducing their property taxes.

The applications for tax or rent rebates for 2007 fiscal year will be accepted beginning Aug. 2008.
