NEW GLOUCESTER – The following events have been announced at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26:

Nature hikes will be held Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Carol Beyna, a trained naturalist, will guide and narrate through field and forest, with side trips to Sabbathday Lake and Aurelia’s Cascade. Cost is $5 for adults; $2 for children; under 6, free.

The seven-step method of chair caning for hand woven chairs will be taught at a workshop on Saturday, June 21, at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26. Fran Faulkner has led the workshops for almost 20 years. Fee is $35, supplies included. Bring a chair with hand woven seat. Preregistration is required.

Betsey-Ann Golon, head herb gardener at the village, will conduct two herbal workshops in June.

On Wednesday or Saturday, June 4 or 7, “Designing an Herbal Theme Garden” will be presented. Herb gardens can be designed with many core ideas in mind – medieval, children, aromatherapy, Bible, meditative. Free plants from the Shaker garden will be included. The fee is $40 and preregistration is required.

On Wednesday or Saturday, June 11 or 14, “Herbal Kitchen Garden” will be the topic. There will be plants, tips, recipes, potted starters provided. Fee is $35 with preregistration required.

The third annual Maine Festival of American Music will be held on Wednesday through Saturday, June 25 to 28, at the village. The festival is directed by the Portland String Quartet.

The four-day festival will include three evening concerts, a workshop and master class day and a lecture/demo centered on Shaker music and a special Shaker folk art exhibit. Guest artists will be saxophonist Kenneth Radnofsky and cellist/carbon instrument maker Luis Leguia. Refreshments will be served.

A series of crafts demonstrations will be held at the village during the season. The demonstrations are free and open to the public.

They will be as follows: June 14, R and R Spinners and Blacksmithing, Tim Greene; July 26, R and R Spinners and Woodturning, Peter Asselyn; Aug. 30, R and R Spinners; Sept. 13, R and R Spinners and Blacksmithing; Sept. 27, Classic Quilters; and Oct. 11, Weaving, Marjie Thompson.
