JAY – The Jay Police Department office will be closed Monday to provide time for the department to move to its new facility, said police Chief Larry White Sr. Tuesday.

The office will be closed to walk-ins but police officers will continue to take calls and respond as usual, he said.

Any calls to the police station will be forwarded to the county dispatcher as they now are after 4 p.m. daily, he added.

White received a $765.87 safety enhancement grant from the Maine Municipal Association this week. The grant will be used to purchase two ergonomic desks for the patrol workstation, he said. The desks presently used are more than 25 years old and do not provide ergonomic support for the officers.

The new facility, a little larger than the department’s present office, has been designed to meet their needs, White said. It will include rooms for interviewing both victims and suspects. A break room will also serve as a multipurpose room for meetings and training, he added. A temperature-controlled room is planned for computers and the new site has better security. When someone enters, they will come into a lobby and speak to the secretary through a window. She then can open a secure door to allow them entrance, he added.

The police will be open at the new site starting Tuesday.
