A quirk in the schedules of Bangor and Lewiston allowed the two boys’ tennis teams to finish the regular season with the same record and the same numer of Heal Points, despite completely different schedules.

According to MPA regulations, the teams had to settle their deadlock in the standings with a coin flip, which Bangor won, giving the Rams the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Class A playoffs.

On the surface, the switch doesn’t sound like it means so much, especially since the Eastern Class A final is scheduled for a neutral site, Waterville’s Colby College.

But with the No. 2 seed, Lewiston now draws No. 7 Brunswick, a team against which the Blue Devils have struggled a bit despite a pair of wins this season.

Lewiston would then draw Mt. Ararat in the Eastern Class A semifinals. The Eagles are considered by many to be the only group able to derail Lewiston’s bid for a sixth consecutive state title.

On the other side of the, uh, coin, the Lewiston girls avoided that scenario by accumulating a few more tournament points than Bangor, and these Blue Devils will stay No. 1 in the East.

Streaking

The Blue Devils’ boys’ team owns the longest stretch of consecutive state titles, regardless of class on the boys’ side, having won each of the last five.

But Lewiston has a long way to go to catch the South Portland and Cape Elizabeth girls. South Portland ran off nine straight titles in the 1970s, while the Capers equaled that feat with nine in a row in the 1990s.

Clash of the (recent) titans

If seeds hold in the Eastern Class A lacross tournament, the Eastern final will pit the only two teams to represent Eastern Class A at the state final under the current playoff format.

Lewiston toppled Brunswick two years ago, losing in the state final to Scarborough.

Brunswick got the better of the Blue Devils last year, and went on to claim the Class A title.

This year, the teams will finish 1-2 in the standings again, though the final results won’t be available for another day or two.

Playoff picture jumble

Today marks the final day of competition for KVAC girls’ lacrosse teams, and plenty is still left to be decided in terms of playoff positioning.

Oxford Hills face Messalonskee this afternoon, and needs a win and a Lewiston loss to leapfrog the Blue Devils into third place.

Lewiston, meanwhile, appears to be able to clinch third place with a win over Morse, regardless of the Oxford Hills outcome.

It’s also possible for both teams to leapfrog No. 2 Mt. Ararat, if the Eagles lose their final game against No. 1 Brunswick.

Stay tuned!
