LEWISTON – Laurier L. Gilbert of 100 Campus Ave., died Wednesday, June 4, at St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion, where he resided, with his wife by his side.
He was born in Lewiston, on July 24, 1924, the son of Lucien and Alma Marquis Gilbert. He attended St. Mary’s School and Jordan School.
He served in the Navy as a baker first class, during World War II from Oct. 13, 1941 until July 9, 1947. He served on the U.S.S. Bushnell and the U.S.S. Mississippi.
He worked for Golden Heart Bread, Country Kitchen Bakery and retired from Knapp Shoe after 29 years of service.
He belonged to the American Legion Post 22, to which he belonged since the age of eight years old as a son of the legionnaire. He was a member of Sacred Heart League of St. Mary’s. As a child he belonged to St. Mary’s Cadets.
He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Church, until its closing and then transferred to Holy Family Church. While at St. Mary’s, he was a eucharistic minister for 20 years and served on all activities of the church, until its closing.
He is survived by his wife, the former Georgette V. Lamontagne, whom he married July 30, 1949; sisters, Muriel Johnson and Lorraine Lavoie; brother-in-laws, Wilbur Crowell and Roger Jourdain; many nieces and nephews, he loved every one as his own.
He was predeceased by his parents; and a sister, Vivian McCall.
