RUMFORD – Norman J. Theriault, 82, of Washington Street, died Wednesday, June 4, at his residence after a brief illness.

He was born in Rumford, on Jan. 18, 1926, a son of the late Thomas and Marie R. (Thibodeau) Theriault.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946.

On June 1, 1947, he married the former Irene (Harpe), and they celebrated 61 years together.

He took over the Sonny Boy Bread route after the death of his father and was in sales all of his life, retiring from Met Life in 1988 after 21 years of service.

He was a member of Robert Shand Post of VFW, the American Legion Post 24, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Rumford Lodge of Elks 862, Fr. Ambrose J. Barry, Council of Knights of Columbus and the Oakdale Country Club.

He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. In earlier years, he and his wife enjoyed spending time at their camp at Roxbury Pond.

He is survived by his wife, Irene E. (Harpe) Theriault of Rumford; his children, Claire E. Hunt of North Carolina, Lawrence J. Theriault of Mexico, David T. Theriault and wife, Isabelle, of Rumford, Dennis P. Theriault and wife, Cynthia, of Roxbury Pond and Ronald J. Theriault and wife, Sally, of Rumford; five sisters, Lucille Madley of New Haven, Conn., Collette Wagner of Rumford, Vernice Sexton of Massachusetts, Marcelle Miller and husband, Roger, of Rumford and Ruth Lynch of Oklahoma; one brother, Russell Theriault of Rumford; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, Raymond; a baby daughter, Jeanne; four sisters, Irene Kinch, Viola Gurney, Giselle Gurney and Lorette Lavoie; and a brother Real “Red” Theriault.
