LEWISTON – A Lewiston woman remained hospitalized Wednesday night with injuries suffered when she jumped from the third floor window of her burning apartment on Wood Street before dawn.

Lisa Evans landed on the roof of a neighboring garage. She apparently suffered head, neck and back injuries and was taken to nearby Central Maine Medical Center. A nursing supervisor said she was in fair condition at 10 p.m.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, said Bruce McKay, a battalion chief at Lewiston Fire Department.

Flames broke out apparently in the living room of her apartment at the rear of the three-story, six-unit building at 51½ Wood St. shortly before 2:30 a.m. Flames were visible in windows at the back corner of the building when firefighters arrived.

Apartments in the first and second floors sustained water damage, McKay said.

After waking her 12-year-old daughter and trying to put out the fire, Evans jumped from the window to escape the flames and smoke.

Her daughter ran down the stairs, knocking on doors to notify tenants as she went. She also was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.

“Everybody else got out fine,” McKay said.

The front apartment on the third floor was not damaged, McKay said. The building didn’t appear to sustain structural damage. Total damage was estimated at $75,000, Lewiston Fire Investigator Paul Ouellette said.

“The building’s safe,” McKay said.

Ten people were displaced by the fire, he said, but were helped by the American Red Cross United Valley Chapter, which placed some of them in local motels, McKay said.

Later Wednesday morning, piles of debris thrown from the third floor could be seen heaped in the driveway beside and behind the building.
