AUBURN – Mary Savignano Gagnon has published a novel, “Are Those Your Shoes?” on lulu.com. Written for “middle readers” in grades 3-6, the book is set in the 1960s, the time of Gagnon’s childhood.

Three girls from different backgrounds become best friends. Wendy Wei is a new immigrant from Hong Kong. Judy Weinstein is the granddaughter of Jews who left Germany just prior to the rise of Hitler. And Linda Johnson is a Yankee born into a family deeply routed in New England.

Gagnon’s goal was to write a book that shows we are all more alike than different.

“Are Those Your Shoes?” includes a glossary for Yiddish, Chinese and Yankee words and phrases that pepper the book. There is also a section that describes the food mentioned in the book.

The cover watercolor was done by Anne Dramko of Cheyenne, Wyo., formerly of Lewiston. The book is available through lulu.com and will soon be available at Percy’s Burrow at the Auburn Mall.
