I write as a veteran in support of Elaine Makas for Maine Senate in the Democratic primary, because of her long history of work on behalf of veterans.

She led the recent fund drive to place two memorial benches in Veterans Park, to honor two Lewiston men killed in Iraq, by raising over $5,000 and ensuring the benches were erected.

When she became aware that families of soldiers killed in battle were only awarded one gold star, she initiated legislation that changed the law so that parents as well as spouses would receive a gold star.

And years ago, during the Gulf War, she organized a drive with her college students to collect and send care packages for female military personnel in the Gulf who were in need of personal supplies.

I urge every veteran to join me in voting for Elaine Makas in the June 10 primary.
