HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) – A three-judge panel has sentenced a Hartford man to 28 years in prison for beating his girlfriend’s 10-month-old son to death with boxing gloves in 2003. The state judges convicted 28-year-old Lee Edwards of manslaughter and other charges in April, but ruled that he did not mean to kill Al-Lex Daniels.

The case spurred a host of changes at the state Department of Children and Families, including more training for staff on how to detect abuse. Al-Lex’s grandfather had pleaded with DCF several times to take custody of the boy before his death to protect him.

Edwards’ lawyer has said that he has mental development problems including a low IQ. Alex’s relatives expressed anger at Edwards at Friday’s sentencing hearing in Hartford Superior Court, and they said they tried to forgive him but couldn’t.

Edwards cried as he told the judges that he loved Al-Lex and wished that God would bring the boy back.
