Sisters of Charity Health System cleans about 1,292,000 pounds of laundry annually. It uses ozone, a natural, environmentally friendly gas that disappears as it cleans. Less water is needed in each load, cold or warm water is used instead of hot water, and linens last longer. This translates to a 50 percent savings on gas, 70 percent savings on hot water, 20 percent savings on overall water, and 20 percent increase in linen life. The process kills 99.9% of bacteria without using harsh, environmentally hazardous chemicals such as bleach.
About 70 percent of SOCHS’ cleaning products are Green Seal or Eco Seal approved, an international standard that ensures environmentally responsible products.
SOCHS is currently in the process of switching to maintenance-free flooring which does not require stripping and refinishing, which will save on the use of water and chemicals.
A new microfiber mopping system reduces chemical and water use by 50 percent while increasing the effectiveness of disinfectants.
