Lewiston – Anthe Chakmakis James, 92, longtime resident of 47 Howe St., died Thursday morning, June 5, at her home.
She was born in Chelsea, Mass., Sept. 2, 1915, a daughter of Theodore J. and Stella (Coulakos) Anagnoson. She was educated in Massachusetts schools and had been a resident of Lewiston for many decades.
She was married in 1937, to Dr. Chakmakis James, a longtime and well-known surgeon in this community, who predeceased her in 1996.
For many years she worked as both a homemaker and as office support for her husband’s medical practice.
She was a very active and longtime member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where among other activities, was a member of the choir for many years. She was also a volunteer at Central Maine Medical Center for several years and among her favorite enjoyments were collecting religious icons and reading her vast library collection of books on theology and spirituality. In her younger years she also enjoyed the opera.
She leaves a sister, Alice Bililies of Belmont, Mass.; two brothers, Dr. William T. Anagnoson and wife, Ethel, of Silver Spring, Md., and John T. Anagnoson of Chelsea, Mass.; her longtime housekeeper and friend, Soula Anionadis of Lewiston; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and one great-great niece.
