FARMINGTON -Western Maine Audubon is planning a field trip for the first day of summer, Saturday, June 21, to study aquatic bugs.
Participants will explore the world of aquatic insects on the Carrabassett River during the trip led by entomologist Marcia Siebenmann, who specializes in aquatic invertebrates.
She received her master’s degree from the University of Maine in Orono and has spent nine years working as a biologist at the USGS National Water Quality Lab Biological Group in Lakewood, Colo.
She currently does stream surveys for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Siebenmann will begin by explaining some of the basics of the aquatic environment and what people can expect to see.
Then they will use small nets to sample the stream to identify and learn about what they find.
People should wear wettable clothes and sneakers/shoes or bring hip boots or waders for stomping around in the water.
Appropriate weather gear is in order also as well as bug repellent/spray, sun block and drinking water.
This will be a rain-or-shine trip.
The field trip will run from 8 a.m. to noon and those going will meet at the Farmington Park and Ride at 7 a.m.
Those who want to drive directly or those who want more information should contact Steve Bien at 897-5215. The trip will be free and open to the public.
