RUMFORD – Want a limited edition Boston Red Sox T-shirt? It’s free if you donate blood at the community blood drive from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Legion Hall at 184 Congress St.
Sponsored by Rumford Hospital and Rumford Area Rotary, the drive is being conducted to supply the American Red Cross with blood at a time of severe shortage across the Northeast, hospital spokeswoman Jane Bubar stated Friday in an e-mail.
“There is currently less than a one-day supply of some blood types,” Bubar said. “As a result, the Red Cross has been forced to cut shipments of blood to area hospitals. Blood reserves in New England were hard hit this year by one of the worst winters in many years. Soon, the summer season will be upon us, creating its own special challenges.”
She said the drive’s goal is to collect 85 pints.
That’s why she urged eligible blood donors to help replenish the blood supply by making an appointment to donate blood at the drive.
As of late Friday afternoon, times that were still available for appointments were 3 through 4:45 p.m., Bubar said.
To schedule an appointment or for more information, call Rumford Hospital at 369-1000 or the American Red Cross at 800-GIVE-LIFE.
