JAY – Voters approved a $10.28 million fiscal 2009 school budget Tuesday, 389-253, Town Clerk Ronda Palmer said.

It also looked like all articles pertaining to the proposed $6 million municipal budget passed, Palmer said, after a rough count. Counting was continuing late Tuesday on the municipal votes, state races and a bond referendum.

The school spending plan is $431,629 more than this year’s $9.85 million budget, but taxpayers will be asked to raise $492,836 less through taxes than they did for this year’s budget.

The amount to be raised by taxes is proposed at $7.8 million compared to $8.3 million for this year’s school budget. The rest of the money will come from the state and other sources.

The town budget reflects a $46,606 – about 1 percent – increase over the existing budget, counting $2.6 million in anticipated revenue.

All town, school and water district candidates on the ballot, who were unopposed, were elected. Those included new selectmen Steve Barker and Tom Goding and School Committee members Mary Redmond-Luce and Marga Hutchinson.
