Dear Sun Spots: Let the person know that the walker she is in need of may be had by contacting rehab services at St. Mary’s, or their social services department. When I was in Maine, St. Mary’s Rehab had a fund for that. It helped get me a walker like the one this woman is describing. – No Name, No Town.

Dear Sun Spots: I would like to know of a place where I can send to buy stones for jewelry and other jewelry parts.

Also, there was a recipe in Sun Spots awhile back for oatmeal cookies. The lady said it was the first thing her mother taught her to make. I believe her name was Alice. I have misplaced it and would love to make them again as they were wonderful. Thank for a great column. – Love your column, Lisbon Falls.

What a memory you have! The recipe for oatmeal cookies ran on April 4, 2001. The person who submitted it wrote that it was the original oatmeal cookie recipe from the Quaker Oats box. She wrote: “that was the first cookie I ever baked under the watchful eye of my exceptional mother, Alice Miles.”

The recipe is as follows: Cream together 1 cup sugar, ½ cup soft shortening. Mix in 2 eggs; add ½ cup sour milk with 1 teaspoon baking soda stirred into it. Mix well. Add 1 cup oats and mix. Add 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, ½ teaspoon salt that have been sifted together. Mix. Add ½ cup cut raisins.

Drop cookie dough onto greased cookie sheet and bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes. To “dress them up,” you can add ½ maraschino cherry on top before baking. This recipe makes about 2 dozen cookies.

Note: To make sour milk, add 1 teaspoon vinegar to ½ cup milk and let stand while getting the baking ingredients together.

Dear Sun Spots: My wife is working on a decorating project and looking for a nurse’s cape that nurses wore to work. They were blue with red lining maybe 40 to 50 years ago. We would really appreciate if someone had one and also the nurse’s hat that was part of the uniform in those days. We may be reached at 782-7864, ask for Moe or Dot. – No Name, City.
