NORWAY – An Oxford man remained hospitalized Tuesday night in Lewiston with stab wounds inflicted in an apartment building on King Street here Monday night, while the man charged with attacking him remained in jail.

The victim was identified as Steven E. Toothaker, 44, according to an arrest report filed at the jail by Norway police Sgt. James Ventresca. Toothaker resides on Webberbrook Road in Oxford, the investigator said Tuesday night.

Steven R. Piirainen, 46, of 256 Coldwater Brook Road remained in jail Tuesday on a charge of Class A elevated aggravated assault. His bail was set at $75,000 cash or $150,000 worth of real estate.

Chief Robert Federico of the Norway Police Department said Piirainen asked the victim for money in the hallway of an apartment building at 9 King St. around 7:30 p.m. When he told Piirainen did he did not have any money, Piirainen attacked him, he said.

Toothaker was stabbed five times in the neck, shoulder, arm and abdomen, according to police. After the incident, he walked to nearby Stephens Memorial Hospital, where he received stitches, according to the police officers.

Federico said most of the wounds were “superficial,” although the stab wound to the arm caused nerve damage and required orthopedic surgery. He was later taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where information on his condition was not being released, a nursing nursing supervisor said Tuesday night.

A weapon has not been found, Ventresca said Tuesday night.

Federico said the man initially thought Piirainen was punching him until he noticed that he was bleeding.

Officers from the Paris and Oxford Police Departments were notified of the incident and sent to Piirainen’s two known addresses, his mother’s home on Coldwater Brook Road in Oxford and a relative’s home at 282 Ryerson Hill Road in Paris. Officer Raymond Paar of the Paris Police Department saw Piirainen outside the Ryerson Hill Road residence, where he was arrested by Ventresca.

Ventresca said Tuesday night that his investigation, so far, has revealed that Toothaker was at the apartment building visiting friends when Piirainen, who knew the man frequented the place, came looking for him and demanded money.

Piirainen has prior convictions of robbery, burglary, criminal threatening, burglary of a motor vehicle, theft and refusing to submit to arrest.

He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on Wednesday, and appear in Oxford County Superior Court at 8 a.m. Sept. 26, according to the arrest report filed at the Oxford County Jail in Paris.
