AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Dorrance Dean Conway, 68, died April 6, at Good Shepherd Hospice having family by his side. He fought a long courageous battle against esophageal cancer.

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Nov. 25, 1939, the son of George and Florence Neely Conway. He attended the local schools. On his 17th birthday, he joined the U.S. Navy and served eight years. During that time, he served in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica on “Operation Deep Freeze” 1959 to 1960, Key West, Fla., Oceanna, Va., and served on the USS Murray.

He married Jacqueline Champagne on July 4, 1963. After residing in Key West, Fla., for two years, they then made their home in Auburn. They had two sons, Clifford E. and Dwayne A. Conway.

He graduated from Central Maine Technical College in Auburn, with high honors as an electrician in 1968. He received his electrical master’s license in 1975. He was a member of IBEW Local 567. He worked as a construction electrician in many states and Canada. He taught the electrical apprenticeship program for many years.

He retired at age 65. He worked with his sons on their land and homes. He enjoyed spending time with his family and especially grandchildren. He was a man of integrity, hard worker and was socially conscious, always concerned for the little guy. He had a great sense of humor, loved to read, was involved in politics, loved sports, especially football and the Steelers. He loved to travel and spend his winters in his Davenport, Fla., home. He was always known to say “I’ll be alright, don’t worry about me” and everything was “super.”

He was a member of IBEW Local Union 567 and a member of the VFW Post 153 in New Auburn. He attended St. Louis and Sacred Heart Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline of Auburn; his son, Clifford E. Conway and his fiancee, Angela Grover, of New Gloucester, and granddaughter, Mariah L. Conway of Lewiston; his son, Dwayne A. Conway and his wife, Kate, and grandson, Carter of Readfield; his brother, Richard (Al) Conway and wife, Lise, of Lewiston; his brother, Donald Conway and wife, Lois, of Munhall, Pa.; sister, Glenda Davis of North Hunnington, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents.
