SOUTH PARIS – Joseph James Lane II, 89, of Paris died Thursday, June 12, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.
He was born in Boston, Mass., on Nov. 19, 1918, the son of Frederick W. Lane and Gertrude E. Watson Lane. He graduated from the New York Military Academy in Hudson, N.Y. in 1937, where he received the Golden Gloves as well as playing varsity football, basketball, track and was a member of the rifle team.
He received a bachelor’s degree in textile engineering from Lowell Technological Institute in 1941. He was a World War II U. S. Army Veteran, first lieutenant, U.S. Infantry, serving with the Black Lions 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division; he was a prisoner of war.
He was highly decorated receiving the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, as well as numerous others including the Prisoner of War medal.
He married Alice Marjorie Woodard. She passed away on Feb. 2, 1984. He married Mary McEwen on Jan. 19, 1985. He held numerous management positions in the textile industry to include vice president and general manager of the Gonic Manufacturing Co. in Rochester, N.H.
He was hired by Robinson Manufacturing on Sept. 22, 1982, as the superintendent. He retired on Dec. 31, 1999.
He loved golf, working in the yard and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of Paris; children, Richard Lane and his wife, Ann, of Pembroke, N.H., and Fredrick Lane of Canaan, N.H., grandchildren, Richard Lane, Joseph Lane and Angela Lane; great-grandchildren, Sarah Lane, Emily Lane and Mason Lane; a sister, Betty Hockmeyer of Milford, N.H.; stepchildren, James McEwen of Bristol, N.H., Cindy Fowler of Paris and David McEwen of North Yarmouth; stepgrandchildren, Jim, Christopher and Corey McEwen, Cailyn Fowler and Alyssa and Cody McEwen.
He was predeceased by a sister, Janet Johnson.
