GRAND LAKE STREAM (AP) – A conservation organization says it’s buying more than 6,600 acres of forest in Down East Maine so it can be protected from development.

The Downeast Lakes Land Trust is buying the land around Wabassus Lake in central Washington County from Timbervest LLC, a private investor group that bought the land in 2004 to keep it from being developed. Downeast says it’s buying the land below market value.

The land trust says it will practice sustainable forestry on the woodlands and keep them open to the public forever, with guaranteed access for hiking, canoeing, camping, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling and other recreation.
