LEWISTON – Police said Friday that they expect to take into custody “shortly” a suspect connected to the robbery of a local credit union two days earlier.

Authorities are following up “solid leads” in their investigation, police Lt. Michael McGonagle said.

A man walked into the Pine Street branch of the Community Credit Union about 1:45 p.m. and handed a threatening note to a teller, demanding cash. He indicated he was armed, but did not brandish a weapon, police said.

Police described him as white, about 20 years old, sporting a pencil goatee. He was wearing a Boston Red Sox cap, a hooded sweatshirt and long black shorts with white stripes on the bottom, McGonagle said.

The man fled the building on foot with the cash in the direction of downtown.

Local police are leading the investigation, but have notified the FBI. If and when an arrest is made, the case would be turned over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Portland because bank robbery is a federal crime, McGonagle said.

Police declined to disclose the amount of cash taken by the man. McGonagle said that information might be used in apprehending a suspect.

The man was captured on surveillance video inside the credit union, which showed him wearing a cap and, earlier, a hood. Police reviewed that footage and gathered other evidence from the scene. A tracking dog was brought to the scene and tried to pick up a scent in backyards on Shawmut Street. Police scoured the area by car and on foot.

Donna Steckino, president and CEO of the credit union, said Friday that the staff did exactly what they were supposed to do to stay safe during the holdup. There were no injuries or incidents, she said.

“The staff is very well trained in these matters,” she said.

She declined to discuss any details of the robbery.

A notice at the credit union’s entrance states that hats, sunglasses and hoods can’t be worn inside, she said.
