SECOND COLLEGE GRANT, N.H. (AP) – An elderly fisherman is safe after wandering away from a fishing spot in far northern New Hampshire and getting caught in dense underbrush for hours.
Fish and Game Sgt. Chip Joseph says 72-year-old Frederick Appleton of Hanover was on property owned by Dartmouth College along the Maine border. Friends who had dropped him off to fish at the Dead Diamond River couldn’t find him early Friday afternoon.
Joseph says a searcher from New England K-9 Search and Rescue found Appleton around 1:30 Saturday morning, several hundred yards from his fishing spot. He said Appleton has Parkinson’s Disease and could not move through the dense brush.
He was not hurt.
Searchers were from Fish and Game, the Dartmouth property and the state police helicopter.
