DEDHAM, Mass. (AP) – A Dedham policeman has fatally shot a 43-year-old man who allegedly charged at two officers with a knife.

Police said Sunday the two officers confronted John Crosby after responding to an emergency call for a man behaving erratically.

The 45-minute standoff Saturday evening prompted the officers to ask the State Police to send an expert to negotiate a peaceful settlement.

But police say Crosby charged before help arrived. Two police officers fired their weapons, but only one struck the man.

Crosby was taken to the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, where he died in surgery.

The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office is investigating.
