SCARBOROUGH – Peter C. LeVasseur, 76, of Devonshire Street, formerly of Old Orchard Beach and Waterford, died on Saturday, June 14, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice Center in Scarborough.

He was born in Boston, Mass., May 25, 1932, a son of Pierre E. and Clara M. Hall LeVasseur. He grew up in Portland, was educated in Portland Schools and graduated from Portland High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge from the Navy, he became an engineer for the Rock Island Railroad Co., in Peoria, Ill. He later served as a postal clerk in the U.S. Postal department in Peoria for several years until he returned to Maine and he was employed by L.L. Bean until his retirement several years ago due to ill health.

On June 10, 1962, he married Shirley M. Haggan in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, in Portland. This past June 10, 2008, they celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of St. Margaret’s Parish in Old Orchard Beach. He was also a member of the National Riflemen’s Association and a member of the Waterford Fish and Game Club.

He was a Civil War history buff and enjoyed leatherwork, target shooting and all animals.

Survivors besides his wife of Portland, include two sons, Peter R. LeVasseur of Lewiston and Joseph E. LeVasseur of Auburn; three daughters, Lisa M. and her husband, Philip E. II Townsend, Aimee L. and her husband, Michael R. Tousignant, all of Old Orchard Beach and Lori C. LeVasseur of Auburn; three sisters, Theresa Hageman of Peoria Heights, Ill., Gloria Coleman of Niantic, Conn., and Agnes Kouns of Lima, OH.; two grandchildren, Emily M. and Amanda C. Townsend; and several nieces and nephews.
