RUMFORD – Selectmen unanimously appointed Len Greaney as interim town manager after an executive session Monday afternoon.
Greaney, a retired engineer who has been active in municipal organizations and is a former state Senate candidate, will begin his duties at 8 a.m. Tuesday. His salary will be set at the board’s regular meeting on Thursday.
Other candidates for the full-time temporary position were former chairman of the Board of Selectmen, Jim Rinaldo, Parks Department director Tim Gallant, and River Valley Growth Council board Chairman Richard Lovejoy.
The length of Greaney’s service will depend on whether town residents approve an amendment to the municipal charter that would allow Mexico Town Manager John Madigan to serve as manager of both Mexico and Rumford, or whether the board will seek a permanent town manager.
Greaney has been an advocate for more regionalization among area towns. He has also devoted time and work to compiling the names of people from Oxford County who served in the military.
A public hearing on the proposed charter amendment that would allow one person to serve both towns will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Municipal Auditorium. Voters will likely act on the amendment in mid-July.
The town manager vacancy occurred after Jim Doar decided not to extend his contract beyond June 10. He served for one year and has taken a position in private industry.
