FARMINGTON – Two roommates were arrested Sunday on charges stemming from the burglary of a new neighbor’s apartment, police said.
Debra Arce-Gonzalez, 26, and Allison Croughwell, 20, both of Farmington, were arrested on charges of burglary and receiving stolen property after police received an anonymous tip early Sunday morning, police officer William Cook said.
A search warrant of the suspects’ apartment at 127 Orchard St. turned up items taken from a young woman who was in the process of moving into the building, Cook said.
A University of Maine at Farmington student, the young woman had moved some items into her new apartment and had them stacked in a corner. She came home Wednesday night to find the door unlocked. While she thought things looked odd, Cook said, she didn’t realize until Friday that the apartment had been burglarized.
“She did check with a friend who was the former tenant to see if she left the door unlocked but didn’t think more about it until Friday when she realized her entire life had been stolen,” Cook said.
Items such as DVDs and CDs as well as a camera brought the value of items taken up to an estimated $2,500, but several other items had an emotional value for her, he said.
“People often notice something is odd and don’t do anything,” Cook said, encouraging people to call when something looks funny because it can help police resolve an issue quicker.
Officer Edward Hastings arrested the two women Sunday. Both have court appearances scheduled for August. Arce-Gonzalez provided $250 cash bail and Croughwell was released on $3,000 unsecured bail.
