SOUTH PARIS – Donald D. Kimball, 85, of Rumford, died Tuesday, June 17, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

He was born in East Bethel, on Aug. 23, 1922, the son of Ceylon M. and Doris Davis Kimball. He attended local schools and entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 26, 1942. He served with the 3278th Ordnance Depot until December 1944, then was with the 99th Infantry Division in Germany.

He married G. Joan Davis of Locke Mills. He was discharged from the service in November 1945. He farmed until 1959, then operated a service station and small engine business in Dixfield until 1986.

During the 1970s, he got a private pilots license and had his own plane. He belonged to the Civil Air Patrol and flew several search and rescue missions. He was an avid volunteer at the Greenwood Historical Society dances, keeping the dance floor perfect and using fans in hot weather.

He is survived by his wife of Rumford; two sons, Peter and wife, Kathy, of Hudson, Mich., and Kenneth and companion, Brenda, of Rumford; three grandchildren, Peter Jr., Jason and Jessica; three great-grandchildren, Ericka, Brooke and Jacob; a brother, Richard of East Bethel; two sisters, Isabel Boyce of Norway and Adella Springer of North Richland Hills, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; and a brother, C. Mellen Kimball of Locke Mills.
