New England sports fans are getting as spoiled as an only child. After years of perfectly honing the image of a kicked underdog resigned to adversity, an unprecedented string of championships is changing everything.
The Patriots, this year notwithstanding, are bordering on dynastic. The Red Sox, after decades of losing, not only swept one World Series, but swept another in 2007 for good measure.
Now the Celtics have joined the party, and earned their own victory parade.
Some might say there’s never too much of a good thing. Even so, the rest of the country must be turning green with envy over all this success. This decade belongs to New England on the gridiron, diamond and hardwood.
What a role reversal! It seems only yesterday that fans were moaning about the Patriots’ fumbles, the Red Sox’s foibles, and the Celtics’ inability to even play the draft lottery correctly, much less the pick-and-roll. In a short few years, everything has changed.
And yeah, it won’t last forever. Nothing ever does. The New York Giants upset of the Patriots in this year’s Super Bowl reminded us that nothing is preordained. They play the games for a reason.
But looking forward, from this point, is unnecessary. Following Tuesday’s drubbing of the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics have joined their Beantown brethren on the sports mountaintop, and have brought a region of fans with them.
It’s time to enjoy the view. Who knows when we’ll be here again.
