MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) – Eight Northeastern governors are urging the U.S. House to approve $5.1 billion in funding to help low-income Americans heat their homes next winter.
This past winter the federal government distributed about $2.6 billion as part of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
Now oil prices are even higher and the governors say the additional money is needed for the most vulnerable.

Last winter, 23,000 Vermont households received an average LIHEAP payment of $1,169.
The Northeastern Governor’s coalition is made up of the six New England states, New York and New Jersey. The organization is chaired by Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas.
