AUBURN – Registration is open for the following YMCA summer swim lesson classes: Parent and Tot, ages 6 to 18 months; Water Babies, 18 to 24 months; Tiny Tots, ages 2 to 5; youth progressive lessons, ages 6 and up; and adult lessons.
All YMCA aquatic programs are designed to instill confidence in participants and make learning new skills fun and challenging in a positive way.
Parent and Tot is designed to introduce infants to the water. A parent is required to participate in the class with the child. Classes are scheduled for Tuesdays 5:30 to 6 p.m. or Wednesdays from 9 to 9:30 a.m.
Water Babies is a 15-minute class catering to the timid new swimmer and has a 1:1 child/instructor ratio. Classes are held once a week on Tuesdays from 10 to 10:15 a.m., Wednesdays from 8:45 to 9 a.m. or Thursdays from 5:30 to 5:45 p.m.
The Tiny Tot program is geared toward teaching kids to swim and feel safe in and around the water. Classes are offered Tuesdays from 9:30 to 10 a.m., Wednesdays from 10 to 10:30 a.m., Thursdays from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m., 1 to 1:30 p.m. or 5:45 to 6:15 p.m.
Advanced Tiny Tot classes are held on Tuesdays from 10:15 to 10:45 a.m., Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. or Thursdays from 1:30 to 2 p.m. or 6:15 to 6:45 p.m.
The National YMCA Swim Program youth progressive lessons are designed to improve children’s swimming skills, teach new skills, work on endurance and stroke techniques, as well as survival skills. Children will be placed in a class based on their swimming level as follows: Polliwog or Guppy, Tuesdays 4 to 4:45 p.m.; Minnow or Fish, Tuesdays 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.; Flying Fish or Shark, Tuesdays 6 to 6:45 p.m.
New will be Kid’s Fitness for swimmers ages 6 to 12. The combination of swimming and aquatic exercise is a way to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Keep physically fit and improve aquatic ability through a combination of games, exercises and goal reaching. The class is limited to 10 participants and will run on Tuesdays from 3 to 3:45 p.m. Cost is $45 youth membership plus $50 program fee for an eight-session.
Also new will be Basic Water Rescue for ages 12 to 15. The class will provide participants with the information and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies.
The course also prepares participants with the skills and knowledge to protect themselves and assist others in aquatic emergencies. The class is good for teens who spend a lot of time around the water. It is limited to 10 participants and will run on Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m.
The summer session will run for eight weeks, beginning the week of June 23. Class size is limited. Registration is taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. All participants must be YMCA members. A yearly (social) membership for those ages 5 and under is $20; youth membership, $45. All the above classes have a $50 program fee.
Adult swim lessons are offered Wednesdays from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Non-members must pay a $20 adult social membership fee good for a year. All participants must pay the $50 program fee for the eight-week session.
The YMCA is also holding registration for the water exercise programs. Water aerobics is a lower impact cardiovascular workout for adults of all ages. Classes are Mondays through Fridays from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.
Water aerobic classes are free for those with a YMCA full privilege membership. Non-members must pay a $20 adult social membership fee and a $65 program fee.
